New fitness trend: Silent Yoga Discos

Have you heard about Silent Yoga Discos? Nope, neither had we. So here's everything you need to know about this growing fitness craze. 

If you're looking for a new way to exercise your body and mind for 2017, silent yoga discos might just be the answer. Best described as large-scale events where everyone does yoga in the dark with headphones on, slient yoga discos first started in Hong Kong in 2014, before spreading to the US.

The concept was brought to Australia by Flow Athletic, and they've now hosted five sold out events across Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast in the past year. 

"We started out with a small event for clients and thanks to the power of social media, the concept just took off! Before we knew it we were holding bigger events and kept having to find bigger venues to fit everyone," says Kate Kendall, yoga instructor and co-founder of Flow After Dark.

Kate believes yoga should be fun and not taken too seriously - and used as a tool to amplify our connection to our self and others.

"Anyone who has taken one of my classes will know that I’m passionate about making yoga approachable and light-hearted."

The best part? Absolutely everyone, no matter what their level of experience, can participate!

  • You will feel more connected to the instructor

At the events you will be loaned a pair of glow in the dark, noise cancelling headphones and when you wear them, you can literally just hear my voice whispering directly into your ear.

You won’t have strain to hear the instructions as the class is literally delivered straight through your wireless headphone to you. Just like a private yoga session!

  • It's an event

I think people are craving soul-expanding experiences like this and sadly, Flow After Dark is not something that you can do every day.

A lot of thought and time goes into these events to ensure that they have the right energy, are held in the right space energetically and that the surroundings are inspiring. We also love partnering with like-minded people who come together with the same aim of creating a really special experience.

  • Lose your inhibitions

The beauty of Flow After Dark is that everyone is wearing headphones. Add DJ James Mack and my lead into the mix and you literally can’t hear anything else so there is no need to worry about how your breathing or ‘omming’ is sounding to anyone else, yet you still get to experience a connection with those around you as you are moving in sync and all with the same intention.

  • It's different and fun

I think that Australians really like to try new things when it comes to health and fitness, so when you introduce a DJ and lights to a yoga class it certainly entices people.

We all spend so much time working, heads down, laptops open, phones on - that it’s important to create experiences that are about getting together in a fun fuelled and healthy way.

We have also chosen to go with a vinyasa flow style of class which is great for people at all levels as you can go as hard as you like, or you can take it easy while you are still working out the poses.

  • Get excited for an active night out 

There’s no doubt that fitness events are taking Australia by storm this year, and why not! You don’t need to hit up the bar every night that you want to go out!
