Man Raises Newborn Triplets After Wife's Sudden Death

Cassia didn't even get to take her triplets home before she died of a blood clot.

The tragedy occurred a mere two weeks after Cassia delivered her babies via C section on January 29.

Her husband of nearly 10 years, Joey, is now struggling to raise the three newborns and the couple's other two daughters, Chloe and Tenley.

Joey, 33, told PEOPLE the family was so preoccupied with the health of their three new babies they didn't realise how much trouble Cassia was in.

"The last thing we thought we had to be concerned about was Casi," Joey said. "We were so focused on the triplets."

According to the family's GoFundMe page, Cassia was sent home from hospital after her C Section but had to return a few days later after suffering a large blood clot on her lungs.

After doctors supposedly treated her blood clot and released Cassia from hospital for a second time, she was able to hold her baby triplets for the first time in the hospital's neonatale intensive care unit.

"Later in the day, we went to the nursery and spent a lot of time holding the babies," Joey recalled. "She was in the hospital with them for four days. She started breastfeeding. It was great. She just ate it up."

Cassi returned home on the Friday, with the babies still in the hospital. She passed away the following Monday.

"My emotions were numb," Joey told PEOPLE. "It didn't feel real at all. It was for sure the worst moment of my life," he says. "It's nothing that we ever would have expected."

Joey has since gone back to work and his mother is helping raise the babies.

A GoFundMe page was created for the family, which has currently raised over $134,000 USD to help Joey and his five kids.

He says he "has to be strong" for the "little ones" but he is still grieving his wife.

"There are so many times during the day when someone asks me a question or something pops into my mind and the first thing I think is just to ask Casi," he said.

"After Tenley was born, Casi said to me, 'If something every happens to me, just make sure the kids know how much I love them.' That stuck in my head," Joey says. "That's one thing I'm going to make sure I tell them all the time."
