Hanging out for a new workout? Bungee Fitness is a low-impact, motion-based resistance program that promises both laughter and weight loss. Emily Dufton took a class to find out what it's like to fly like Peter Pan and left sweaty but happy, with a successful back-flip under her belt.
When I heard about a new fitness trend that would give me the chance to dive, fly, bounce and back-flip while working up a sweat and burning calories, I was quick to sign up for a class.
Having undergone two knee surgeries in the last three years, I've been limited to low-impact forms of exercise involving minimal jumping and was excited by the promise of a workout that could get my heart racing without causing any pain to my injured knee.
Bungee Fitness is owned and operated by Brooke Champley, who is passionate about giving people of all ages, sizes and physical abilities a fun and low-impact workout option.
Bungee Fitness is suitable for all fitness levels and abilities, so whether you're looking for high-intensity training or to reintroduce yourself to exercise after an injury or weight gain, it's likely you'll find a class right for you.
“The rehabilitation and physiotherapy side of Bungee Fitness is really valuable because it’s so low-impact on your body and gives everyone the opportunity to work out, even people who've never been able to before,” says Brooke.
The classes move at varying paces, which means it is suitable people of all ages and weight ranges - including those classified as obese - and those with physical limitations or disabilities, such as cerebral palsy or MS.
Before joining a class, your height and weight are measured to assess the level of bungee support right for you. You're then fitted with a harness that fastens around your waist and legs, before being hooked onto either one or two bungee cords, dependent on your weight.
The bungees provide immediate support - Brooke says that each cord supports about 30 to 40 kilograms - so you'll instantly feel lighter on your feet.
"The support of the bungee allows you to do more repetitions of an exercise than you would normally be able to manage," says Brooke.
Brooke has also noticed the workout is an incredible confidence-booster for people who have struggled to exercise in the past, because it enables them to do exercises they've never been able to do before, like full push-ups, burpees and - once they've mastered the basics - even back-flips.
Bungee Fitness promises a fun and non-judgemental atmosphere for anyone to come along and have a go.
“Once people are strapped in, they’re instantly having fun and laughing,” says Brooke. “It’s very unlike the intimidating atmosphere you might find in a gym because everyone is new and no one is an expert - you're all learning together.”
With a range of workouts available - including classes for school kids, mums with babies, corporate team building, extreme HIIT workouts and a light option for the elderly or injured - Bungee Fitness really does have something for everyone.
The program offers a high cardio workout which raises your metabolism to start burning fat immediately, without putting stress on your joints.
By committing to regular classes, Brooke says you'll burn fat, increase your stamina, tone muscles, build core strength and improve your flexibility, balance and coordination.
An extreme HIIT class can burn up to 1,500 calories in 30 minutes, making it a convenient and supercharged workout for people who don’t have a lot of time to spend exercising.
The premise of Bungee Fitness is so unlike anything I've ever tried that I arrived for my Fundamentals class unsure whether I'd be good or terrible at the workout.
After discussing my workout goals and physical health with the team, I was weighed, measured and hooked up to a bungee cord and instantly felt light and bouncy, as though I'd shed a whole heap of weight.
After covering the basics, we got started. Exercises like lunges, squats and burpees, which I usually find a monotonous and unexciting part of a normal gym workout, were made much easier - and actually fun - with the support of the bungee.
After a 45-minute intense, sweaty workout doing exercises I'd not been able to do even before my knee injury, I felt exhausted and simultaneously confident, graceful and competent.
By the end of the class, I was flying around the room like Peter Pan, jumping into the air like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix and even successfully back-flipping, with no knee pain to speak of.
Brooke and her team worked with each class member one-on-one, making it feel almost like a personal training session, without the sky-high fee.
Bungee Fitness is the most fun I've ever had while exercising and I can see it becoming incredibly addictive as your confidence, ability and fitness grow.
