Juice it up this Spring and Summer

There are few things as refreshing on a spring or summer morning as a freshly pressed or blended juice.

Great-tasting and chock full of vitamins and minerals, this drink will have you energised and ready to take full advantage of the longer days.

The glory of the green smoothie has long been touted, as adding a little kale or spinach gives you a healthy dose of greens that are masked when blended with a bit of citrus. Nutrient dense, easy to grow and perfect in almost any smoothie, kale will amaze you with its detoxifying powers.

Kale boasts high amounts of phytonutrients, omega-3s, vitamin C, A, and K and antioxidants, all of which make it a sort of miracle green, helping your body fight depression, diabetes and even cancer.

Try mixing green grapes, a couple green apples, several kale leaves, banana, celery, chopped ginger and fresh lemon juice into an absolutely tangy, unbeatably invigorating smoothie.

Hemp protein powder will supply your body with heaps of amino acids, which make it the perfect addition to a smoothie, especially for vegans and vegetarians. This protein boost will give you energy, enthusiasm and help make your skin glow. Try blending a smoothie with a scoop of hemp powder, almond milk, peanut butter and banana.

Don't underestimate the power of the blueberry. Nicknamed the "brain berry", these delectable berries pack a punch in terms of antioxidants, vitamin C, fibre, manganese and flavonoids, which combine to improve eyesight and memory, fight UTIs and boost your cardiovascular functions.

Even better, blueberries are incredibly versatile and delicious, so working them into a smoothie is easy. Try mixing a cup of fresh blueberries with banana, a spoonful of coconut oil and a dash of flaxseed, some stevia, ice, and a glass of filtered water.

Be adventurous! Mix and match produce, nuts and fruit to find your favourite combinations. Starting your day with a smoothie will get your brain roaring to go, and mixing yourself a smoothie when you're feeling low mid-afternoon will give you a genuine, lasting energy boost.
