Is Chocolate Good for You?

Is chocolate good for you? Oh, how I want to say yes! But the truth is it’s no Brussels sprout. There’s no need to empty out your pantry just yet, though, because the good news is that chocolate, in its purest form, has many health benefits.

Chocolate with a high cocoa content is better for you because there is less room for sugar, vanilla, milk, and other stuff that makes chocolate less of a vegetable and more of a candy. So, choose the right kind of chocolate and you can get your indulgence hit and health kick all in one.

What kind of health kick are we talking about? Chocolate is a champion antioxidant. Antioxidants help rid the body of free radicals, which cause aging and disease. Dark chocolate actually has more antioxidants than blueberries!

Chocolate can also help lower blood pressure, up libido, boost blood circulation and decrease heart disease. But, like most things, it should be enjoyed in moderation because the most important thing for your health is your body weight. Dietician Susie Burrell, www.susieburrell.com.au, says it can take 45 minutes of running to burn off the kilojoules in 10 small Easter eggs or two Cadbury Crème Eggs!

So, now you know that chocolate with a high cocoa content level eaten in moderation is A-okay, but how else can you feel good about your Easter treats? You can buy Fairtrade.

When you choose Fairtrade Certified chocolate you’re helping create a better and brighter future for cocoa farmers and their families in developing countries because you can be assured that they have been paid a fair price for their work. They also receive additional funds to develop their communities and invest in everyday things like education and healthcare.

You can get great Fairtrade Certified chocolate from Chocolatier Australia, Lindsay & Edmunds, Scarborough Fair, ALDI, Alter Eco, Cocolo and Oxfam.

That’s three great ways to enjoy your chocolate guilt-free!
