Adult babies? Yes, you heard right. This is the secret world of grown-ups who just love being babied. Take a peek inside this subculture, where the men and women engage in whimsical role play, to escape the pressures and responsibilities of modern life.
Welcome to the world of adult babies where men and women of varying ages dress up and take on the characteristics of pretty much, a baby. This isn't sexual; for this group it's all about heading back to the stress-free existence of babyhood.
Here we delve into the motivations behind this growing trend in the UK and USA, as seen on our new series, I'm An Adult Baby, exclusive to LifeStyle YOU, on March 26th at 9.30pm.
A good 200 to 500,000 in the US and UK alone are taking part in this trend, for its relaxing effect. "When I put a nappy on it takes me back to that time when I had no stress," says adult baby Derek. With wife Maxine, they run an adult baby nursery, charging 50 pounds an hour (AUS $98.95), and booking hourly, 12 hour or 24 hour sessions. "They feel that they can really relax and become the person they are, that they have to hide everything else," says Maxine.
For 37-year-old Colorado resident Justin, he met his 27-year-old girlfriend Cat, on an adult baby social networking site. "I'm interested in their qualities, those childlike qualities of wonder, of needing someone, of being needed," says Justin.
For Cat, her traumatic childhood has led to the hope of creating new, positive memories."My mother would go into manic episodes.....it was horrible...there was a time where she got a gun and asked me to shoot her, and then I ended up in foster care....I never had a childhood," reflects Cat.
While most adults would socialise via a bar, restaurant or nightclub, for young couple Cat and Justin, they prefer to host 'adult baby parties' at their home. Inviting 25 adult babies, guests would dress up and participate in children's party games in the 'nursery'.
While at first these adult babies may have been too afraid to confess their preference of such activities to wider society, this newfound trend is constantly growing on social media. A growing demand for adult baby clothes and accessories has led to the creation of online stores such as Diaperbook, to cater to their every whim.
