How to Use Crystals in Your Everyday Life

Our Wellbeing Expert, Sam Sargent, provides three basic tips for choosing, caring for, and using healing crystals.

The use of healing crystals is nothing new, with records showing their existence in the lives of the Ancient Sumerians, Greeks, Egyptians and Chinese.

I still carry around the same little Howlite crystal that caught my attention 20 years ago. Now, I live in a house with numerous crystals in various rooms. Seriously. My husband is also quite the crystal-lover! I certainly cannot profess to be an expert, as the properties of crystals baffle me. But I love that I have absolutely no idea about how they do what they do. What I do know, however, is how I feel when I use crystals in my daily life.

Following are my top tips for choosing, caring for and using crystals.

1. How to choose a crystal

There are different crystals for just about anything. Some are renowned for their cleansing, stress-relieving and purifying properties, e.g. amethyst. Others for their soft energy of love, compassion, self-acceptance and peace, e.g. rose quartz. And others for their warm, energising, abundant properties to help support the transformation of dreams and wishes in to tangible form, e.g. citrine. When choosing a crystal I have always found that it’s best to follow your instinct and go with the ‘gut’ reaction. Whenever I’ve chosen a crystal it has always been a non-negotiable deal in my head. It’s like the crystal is literally jumping up and down saying ‘pick me, pick me’.  This may sound a bit ‘woo woo’, but I assure you, nobody knows what is better for you than you. So always go with your gut instinct.

2. When you first receive a crystal, make sure you clean it 

Crystals take on energy, just like we do, especially if they are frequently handled. So it’s essential to care for your crystals and cleanse them regularly. The energy of the full moon is the perfect time to cleanse and charge your crystals. On the evening of a full moon wash your crystals in salt water, preferably in the ocean, but not imperative. If you can’t get to the ocean, then gently rinse in a bowl of water with a sprinkle of sea salt. Then lay your crystals out on a natural surface (preferably the earth) under the full moon’s light.

3. How to use crystals

Take a moment for yourself and quieten your mind. Then choose an area in your home where you instinctively feel that you would like to position your crystal. It may be a rose quartz in the bedroom, or an amethyst in the living room or citrine in your work space. Again, go with your gut instinct. You can always change your mind and rearrange at a later date.

Crystals are also great to use during quiet ‘me’ moments. If you’re having a stressful day, take 5, 10 or 15 minutes just for you. Turn your mobile phone to silent mode and find a quiet space at home. Lay on the couch, bed, floor or wherever else you feel comfortable and hold the crystal in your hand. Or you might feel like placing the crystal on your body, on a certain chakra area. Again, follow your natural instincts. Take the time to clear your head. With every exhale, breathe out any stress or worries. With every inhale breathe in peace and love.
