Give a Little this Christmas

Think of others this Christmas and get out into the community to spread the seasonal cheer.

If you have the time, ability or money to help give back to your community this year, Christmas is a great time to do so. Many families struggle at this time of year and will appreciate any help you can offer, so don't be shy!

If you're looking for unique ideas to help out, here are some great ways to get involved.

Think of others this Christmas and get out into the community to spread the seasonal cheer.

Get involved in the neighbourhood

If you've got spare time in the lead up to Christmas this year, help out busy parents and struggling families who may need a break. Do a letterbox drop offering to host an afternoon session of arts and crafts with the neighbourhood children to give frazzled parents some time off.

Assemble craft ideas, tools, supplies and helpers to prepare the event, and encourage kids to create Christmas cards, gifts and artwork. It may be only a few hours of your time but it could be just the break some struggling parents need to relax and collect themselves this silly season.

Offer elderly neighbours assistance

Many elderly people will want to shop for their families this Christmas but may not have the mobility to do so. Knock on their doors and offer them a ride to the local shops, and accompany them on their trip to help select the perfect gift for their loved ones.

Give to a food drive

Many towns and cities will have their own food drives to provide meals to the needy this Christmas. Next time you're stocking up on groceries, add a few extra items to your trolley to drop off at your local collection centre and help brighten up the day of someone less fortunate. Many charities also distribute gifts to children and adults who may not otherwise receive any, so bear this in mind when you're doing your family's Christmas shopping.
