While the idea of a weekend away with the boys is nothing new, there's now an official buzzword for it - the 'mancation.' And with the Ashes in full swing and the Australian Open just around the corner – man-only getaways are at top gear!
Before you conjure up a debaucherous scene from 'The Hangover', it seems these man-only breaks aren't just about booze-fulled nights and bad behaviour.
A recent independent study of 500 blokes revealed that 66 per cent have taken a guys-only holiday with their friends in the last two years with another 56 per cent saying a man-trip is on the cards in the next year. The top reasons for these trips were cited as an opportunity for ‘male bonding’ and the chance to ‘get away from their other halves’.
Responding to the increasing popularity of the ‘mancation’, online accommodation provider Quickbeds.com has coined a few quirky offerings to fulfil the needs of this growing market. General Manager, John Feenaghty said it isn’t just Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who take off for a bit of male bonding – ordinary groups of men are also making the most of their travelling needs and wants with their mates too.
“We have taken the ‘boys’ weekend away’ up a notch, not just offering great packages around sporting events like footy grand finals, but surfing holidays to the Maldives, barramundi fishing in the Kimberley’s or kayaking in the Antarctic – it’s about putting holidays together that specifically appeal to men, not just women or families,” Mr Feenaghty said.
“While traditionally the guys have jumped in a car with their mates and headed off to wherever the road took them, now more advanced planning to distinctive locations is taking place.” Some hotels are also getting in on the act, by serving nachos and beer on arrival, as opposed to a flower lei, cocktail or pamper pack.
“I think it’s great that travel companies are now offering male-only travel packages,” says Sydney-based Senior Online Marketing executive Dan Ferguson. ”I can’t wait to take a mancation!”
Let’s just hope they don’t get a mancold while they’re away!!
