Need some inspiration to map out some fun family adventures over the holidays?
With beautiful weather on the cards, here are our top 10 summer activities to do with the kids. Best of all they're free!
1. Plan a Picnic
Round up the kids and enjoy the summer weather with a family picnic. When preparing food at home, be sure to get the whole family involved, as it will save time and give you more chance to bond. If you're Sydneysiders, bring your picnic basket down to the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens where you can bask in the glorious surroundings. Or simply pop down to your local park!
2. Beach It
With so many beautiful beaches in each state, it’s a no-brainer to head on down to your nearest beach on a hot summer’s day. Whether you’re visiting Bondi, St Kilda or Surfers Paradise, just remember to slip slop slap!
3. Summer by the Sea
Victorians can check out all things coastal and marine in January with the annual Summer by the Sea! There are plenty of free family fun activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and marine monitoring stretching right across the coastline.
4. Cook Up a Storm
As the weather gets toasty, why not get busy with the kids in the kitchen? There are plenty of delicious recipes that are easy to follow on LifeStyle FOOD. Get the kids to cook while you supervise as this will allow them to learn - and hopefully convince them to whip up dinner every night!
5. Go Camping
Warm summer nights mean it’s the perfect time to go camping with the family. With many national parks in each state that offer camping facilities, the kids will have a ball on this family adventure. If you have little ones and don’t want to travel too far, pitch a tent in the comfort of your own back yard! It's also the perfect excuse for a little star-gazing and to teach them some basic astronomy.
6. Summer BBQ
Invite the families of your kids' friends over and and have a good old Aussie BBQ. Whether you decide to host it in your own home or at the park, assign each family a dish to bring whether it is an entree, main or dessert and that way you all share the load. Let the kids play and the adults can kick back and enjoy some great company.
7. Bond on a Bushwalk
Get all your troops together and head off on a bushwalk. Spending time with the family in the fresh air on a beautiful day will be a great bonding experience and what’s more, its an ideal outdoor exercise for kids and adults alike.
8. Get Gardening
When the sun is out, why not make the most of it and get the kids involved by helping plant some flowers in the garden? This will teach them to nurture the environment and over the course of a few weeks, their hard work will show! You could also search for your local community garden and volunteer your time to local projects.
9. Car Wash
If your kids love water, what could be more productive than washing the family car? Get them to help make those family wheels shine, just make sure to double check water restrictions in your city. It’s a great way to help cool down in the heat and once the car’s clean, take it for a spin down to the beach!
10. Movie Time
If it’s too hot outside, turn your lounge room into a cinema and enjoy a movie marathon with the family. It’s quite easy, all you need to do is pick your family’s favourite movies, get some snacks to share and hit play!
