Got a ring on it? Then now is the time to start getting into tip-top shape for your wedding day. And how about your partner does the same? ‘Shredding before the Wedding’ is a new couples fitness phenomenon that can tighten your relationship, as well as your glutes, Emma Bangay discovers.
You may not be permitted to see your fiancé on the eve of the wedding, but 21st-century romance sure calls for clocking major hot and heavy time leading up to The Big Day, explains elite athlete and personal trainer, Lauren Hannaford.
“Wedding shredding is when couples work out together to trim down and tone up so they are feeling fit, happy and healthy for their big day, their honeymoon - and in an increasing amount of cases - for a long time into their married lives,” she told LifeStyle YOU.
“The process involves a strict diet and fitness plan that will help both bride and groom strip body fat and build lean muscle,” she explains, adding that exercising in the lead up to the event also helps relieve stress and allows couples to spend quality time together away from the madness of planning the day itself.
“The premise is that the couple will have the same goals when they become engaged, so why not work together to get there?”
Why Shred before you Wed?
Your wedding is most likely to be one of the most memorable – and widely documented - days of your life, so it’s understandable you want to look your best.
Therefore, working towards a wedding with an active, inspired attitude in tandem with your partner can prove a turning point in both your lives, explains Lauren.
“On a day-to-day basis people find it hard to keep the discipline to train if they don’t have a specific goal in mind,” says Lauren. “Usually the best results come from training for events, whether that be a marathon, boxing match, or in this case, a wedding!”
If done the right way, couples can train for longer lasting results and build their muscle tone, core strength and generally to be fitter and healthier, she adds. “If done together, then they are more likely to keep it up and motivate each other as they embark on their lives together. It’s perfect timing!”
Another benefit of 'shredding before the wedding' is that it can be done anywhere. You don’t need a fancy gym membership at all. Tacked onto the end of a run together, you can do this swift workout in the comfort of your courtyard or lounge room. And you can be guaranteed there will be giggles and close (albeit) sweaty exercise encounters ahead!
Three Wedding Shredding Exercises (BYO Groom-to-be)
1. Push up / Sit Up
This combo will help you to tone your arms and strengthen your core, while your partner works on his abdominal muscles.
2. ‘T’ jumps
One of you sits down making a ‘T’ with their arms and keeping their legs out straight.
The other person starts from behind and jumps over the outstretched arm, then over your legs and back over.
3. Push-Up Claps
Clap hands with your parnter after each push-up, alternating between left and right. Incorporate three rounds of ten push-ups into your workout.
4. High-Five Burpees
Nobody loves doing burpees so why not make it fun by timing your jump with a high five. You will end up in hysterics trying to get the timing right. Attempt to do a set of 15 and connect hands after each one.
