Nutritionist-approved beach snacks

Pack the ultimate beach bag with snacks that are delicious and good for you.

It may be tempting to stop in at the beachside ice cream van or grab a bucket of hot chips with extra salt, but sometimes it’s just as good to reach into your own bag for a whole host of goodies that taste good and give you energy.

HelloFresh nutritionist and head of culinary, Hannah Gilbert shares her top five snacks that are perfect to grab and go for a hot day at the beach this summer. 


Fruit is a great portable snack and can easily be thrown in your bag – especially oranges and bananas as they have their own natural wrappers. 

“Snacking on fruits will help keep your blood sugar levels steady and are a good source of nutrients like potassium, which can be lost through sweat on a hot day,” Hannah explains. “Fruits like watermelon and oranges also have a high water content helping you to keep you hydrated.”


It’s so easy to carry around a bag of nuts for anytime you are feeling peckish.

“Nuts are high in healthy fats, protein and fibre. This combination helps to satisfy hunger for longer and contributes to good heart health and weight management,” Hannah tells. “A handful of nuts every day is an essential part of a balanced diet.”


If you have plain and air-popped popcorn, it is considered a healthy wholegrain food that’s both low in kilojoules and high in fibre.

“Popcorn contains some vitamins and minerals, such as B6, magnesium, zinc and iron in small quantities,” Hannah says. “Flavoured varieties such as sweet, buttered or salted are best enjoyed as an occasional treat as they will have a higher saturated fat, sugar and sodium content.”

Veggie sticks and dip

Before you head off for the day, cut up some carrots, celery, cucumber and capsicum. These simple veggie sticks are packed full of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

“For an extra tasty and satisfying snack, pack some hummus or nut butter as a dip, which will add some extra protein and healthy fats,” Hannah suggests.

Bliss balls

If you’re a sweet tooth but don’t want to be chomping on chocolate bars all summer, bliss balls are the answer.

“They're moist, chewy and packed with healthy ingredients like nuts, dates, cocoa and coconut,” Hannah says. “They pack a punch nutritionally and kick sugar cravings all at the same time.”
