Celebrity Fitness Trend: Shape Up with Hypoxi!

Heidi Krause road tests the latest celebrity weight loss craze taking Australia by storm.

Want to lose stubborn weight from your tummy, hips, bum and thighs and reduce cellulite in as little as 4 weeks? If you’re anything like me, the answer is a loud and clear yes!

If all the hype is to be believed, then a new treatment called Hypoxi can do exactly that. Even celebrities like Robbie Williams, Madonna and Cheryl Cole are said to be loyal followers. So when I was given the chance to try this fitness fad out, I jumped at the opportunity.

What is it?

Hypoxi is a non-invasive targeted fat and cellulite reduction treatment that combines exercise with vacuum technology.

Developed by a team of Austrian doctors, Hypoxi works by stimulating blood circulation in problem areas of the body that traditionally have very poor blood supply (ie. the lower half of the body). The aim? To accelerate fat metabolism and skin toning in these zones.

What can you expect?

I’m told to acheive optimal results, I need to undertake three 30 minutes sessions each week over a period of four weeks.

Each session I wriggle my way into a tight neoprene skirt (think wetsuit material), get hooked up to a heart rate monitor and jump into a machine known as the L250 – essentially a horizontal cycling machine in a pressurised chamber.

It is definitely a strange sensation to have your lower body encased in a pod with air being sucked in and out at regular intervals, but you soon get used to it.

The best part is that while you’re cycling away (I was instructed to maintain about 65 revolutions per minute) you can also catch up on the latest gossip mags or watch a DVD. Yes, I broke into a light sweat, but it’s far easier on the body than an intensive cardio session. Plus, I found it a lot more appealing to front up to the welcoming little studio in Surry Hills after a long day at work than hit the gym.

The Hypoxi team also recommend you stay away from carbs for four to six hours after each session, stick to a high protein diet and limit your consumption of alcohol, surgar and fat during the course of your treatment. Aha! I somehow knew it wouldn’t be as simple as a few cycling sessions – but a healthy-balanced diet sure beats four weeks of juices or lemon detox drinks. I'm officially hooked!

The Results?

After completing my 12 sessions, I’ve lost almost 4 kgs and an impressive total of 23 cms from my waist, hips, bum, thighs and knees. Yippee! I also feel like my skin is firmer and my energy levels have improved.

I’m sure part of this can be attributed to the healthy diet I was following as well as my regular running sessions, but Hypoxi definitely motivated me to trim down and I can notice fewer lumps and bumps!

At $69 each individual session (or $690 for 12 sessions), Hypoxi isn't exactly cheap, but when you compare it to a personal trainer or boutique gym, it's quite reasonable. If you have a special event coming up or are feeling unmotivated then signing up to a 4-week program could be just the thing to help kick start your weight loss journey.
