Are you feeling sluggish and overweight after winter? Do you have an aversion to gyms? Is the very thought of pulling out your (gulp) bikini from the bottom drawer enough to make you shudder?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should consider signing up to a fantastic outdoor fitness program known as Booty Camp. LifeStyle YOU went along to check it out.
What is it?
Booty Camp is boot camp - but just for girls.
The outdoor fitness courses are specifically designed to get women fit – to get your metabolism burning faster and target the bits of your body that you really care about. Think: a firm butt, flat abs, toned arms and lean, sexy legs. (Yes please!)
The courses run for 6 weeks in inspirational outdoor locations all around Australia. As the Booty Camp website exclaims: Nothing beats a breath of fresh air and a stunning view when you are telling your muscles ‘just one more’.
Classes are held twice a week (both before and after work – depending on your preference) and there is no membership required. So if at the end of the 6 weeks you want a break, there is no obligation to return. However if you’re anything like me, you’ll be back for more! Another great feature is that class sizes are kept small (never more than 12 girls in a class) and of course are all led by fully-qualified Personal Trainers (not just Group Trainers).
What can I expect?
In my first session we launch straight into a fitness test – which you also do again at the end of the 6-week rotation – so you can measure your results in a tangible way. This includes an assessment of your cardio fitness, upper and lower body strength, core strength (ouch – don’t make me do the plank!) and flexibility.
Sessions are kept diverse and varied. There is definitely no room to get bored with the workouts at Booty Camp. They include and aren’t limited to: circuits, hill sprints, lunges, squats, burpies, resistance training, sit-ups and of course boxing.
The Boxing sessions were definitely my favourites – and if you haven’t tried Boxing before, then Booty Camp is a fantastic place to start. Boxing is one of the most effective ways to raise your heart rate, strengthen your muscles, flatten your stomach and best of all – release all your pent-up stress and aggression!
Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest timing to sign up to Booty Camp at the tail-end of autumn. I have to admit it was extremely difficult dragging myself out of bed in the freezing cold mid- winter. However an early-morning wake-up is going to be a challenge no matter what form of exercise you sign up to – and at least I knew I would be greeted with friendly faces and warm smiles.
In many ways, Booty Camp means you get the benefits of a PT session – minus the hefty price tag. Also don’t front up expecting to be yelled and screamed at commando-style (if that’s your thing). I was consistently worked hard in a supportive environment and even managed to share plenty of laughs and stories along the way.
Of course the real benefit comes from the feeling of satisfaction after each session. In particular, I felt that by opting for the morning classes meant I was kick starting my metabolism and getting energised and ready for the day ahead.
Booty Camp is certainly not a miracle weight-loss solution. Like any exercise program, you will only get out as much as you put in. So if you have specific goals you want to tick off – then speak to your trainer and make them happen! It’s also a great way to spice up your current exercise routine. Given there are only 2 sessions a week, the courses give you the flexibility to continue with other exercise options that tickle your fancy - such as yoga or running.
While I didn’t lose inches off my waist, (I don’t think my regular red wine consumption and all those hearty winter meals helped!) the experience definitely made me more mindful of my health and fitness goals – and has put me on the path to achieving them in the lead-up to summer. Booty Camp has also helped renew my early-morning wake-up habit, which I can’t recommend highly enough!
Booty Camp also offers eating plans (known as Eat Yourself Sexy) that you can do in conjunction with the fitness sessions – or as a stand-alone program. The program gives you a satisfying but flexible 6-week eating plan, access to a Booty Camp nutritionist and support forum (to share recipes, motivation or even just a gossip) and a weekly shopping list.
