Barbie has never looked better!
Mattel toys has expanded its range of beloved Barbie dolls to cover a range of shapes and sizes.
While Barbie and her unrealistic proportions will still grace shelves, she will be joined by a posse of more life-like figures.
Welcome, Barbie Fashionistas - the doll of the present!
"With 4 body types, 7 skin tones, 22 eye colors, and 24 hairstyles, we proudly offer girls more choices than ever," Barbie wrote on Instagram.
Blue hair, big butt, dark skin - Barbie can now look more like the women you see everyday, and less like the women of the Playboy mansion.
According to TIME magazine, this is the biggest change in Barbie's 57-year history and the secret was held so tightly it was code named 'Project Dawn'.
Over the past couple of decades, Barbie has faced heavy criticism for her lack of diversity, and the message her body and look was having on the mass of young girls who play with and adore her.
According to Barbie's General Manager, Evelyn Mazzocco, the company needed to respond to such criticisms.
"Of course it was inspired by social media. You know, does [Barbie] really know what's going on in the world today? She seems a little out of touch."
Mattel looked at the range of the most popular celebrities today: Beyonce, Rihanna, Lena Dunham, Kim Kardashian, Mindy Kaling, Demi Lovato, Meghan Trainor, Katy Perry. None of these celebs (except maybe Taylor Swift) remotely resembled their beloved doll, and the company realised it needed to catch up with the world little girls were growing up in. In their own words, they needed to make Barbie "relevant".
The company has done a great job trying to cover a diverse range of dolls - offering new and improved role models to little girls everywhere.
