AFL Star Joel Selwood's Health and Fitness Tips

AFL sensation and Geelong Cats captain Joel Selwood, knows all too well the importance of keeping fit and healthy. Here Joel shares his top 6 tips to being the best version of you.

We may not be a professional sports player, but there are certain things we can take away from their lifestyle. AFL star Joel Selwood and ambassador for Weet-Bix GO, shares his six tips to leading a happy and healthy life.

1. Don't skip breakfast

I've always been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It's the fuel that'll help you get on with your day, and it doesn't matter if you're going to training or playing a game of footy, going to school or work, everyone needs to have a wholesome breakfast! 

I make sure I have a healthy breakfast and morning snack to get me through the day. I generally start off with a few Weet-Bix with cold milk and honey on top, followed by a Weet-Bix GO biscuit while on my way to training.

2. Eat clean

During the footy season I'm quite strict. I make sure I'm eating lots of protein and veggies, and I drink lots of water.

3. Occasionally indulge

In season, I generally try to stay focused on maintaining a healthy diet, but I do struggle when there's a block of chocolate sitting in front of me. My other guilty pleasures are pizza, and ice-cream with chocolate topping for dessert.

4. Relax and unwind

Besides a great diet, exercising keeps me feeling well and happy. I love to go for runs as it's generally where I do my thinking, and provides me with an opportunity to relax and unwind. I'll go for a walk and think about the game. Once I've played it through in my mind, I'll relax and focus on the week ahead.

5. Spend time with others

I like to spend time with my partner Britt, friends and family. My older brother Troy is a former Brisbane Lions Player and he's my only brother living in Geelong, so we'll hang out too and things can get pretty competitive! 

6. Go for it

The three things I tell my team mates before every game is to believe in themselves, be brave, and play as a team. What you put in is what you get out of life. Life is short, so make sure you enjoy what you do.
