6 unique and thoughtful Valentine’s Day gifts

This Valentine's Day, don't settle for the mundane. Show your significant other that you really care by finding them a gift that's just for them.

Every year, 62 per cent of people spend time and money finding the perfect gift for their sweetie - and it's almost always chocolates and flowers. Why go with the ordinary when you could get them something they'll love and use every day?

Here are our some of our favourite simple, but thoughtful, gifts!

1. Personalised stationery

If your significant other is the type to lament social media and wants to start more personal conversations, or they work in a mundane desk job and need something to brighten their day, a gift of personalised stationery is thoughtful and something they'll use all the time. Beautiful monogrammed stationery in his or her favourite colour is a great way to encourage them to get amorous with some love letters! And every time they pull it out to write a note they’ll think of you. Stationery not their thing? We also love the idea of a personalised bottle of wine

2. An amazing book

Books make a fantastic gift, but the trick is to find exactly the right book. One of the best ways to find a unique and personal book that they're sure to love is to check out which books they already own. If your sweetie has a lot of books by a particular author, check to see if they have anything new out. You may even be able to score an autographed copy online. Another great way to find a book they'll love is to use the Internet to search for books similar to his or her favourite book. A good tip is to input their favourite book into Amazon and scroll down to the ‘Customers who bought this item also bought…’ section to see what else your lover might be interested in. Years down the road, you can talk about how you gave your love their new favourite novel.

3. A personalised hamper

Whether your love is interested in home décor, food, writing or sport or a little bit of everything, the perfect way to show them you appreciate all of their interests and know them inside out is to create a personalised gift hamper with a number of small gifts for all facets of their personality. Include a hat from their favourite sports team, their favourite snacks, a new collar for their beloved dog, a bottle of champagne for good measure… the list is endless!

If you’re tight for time and can’t get to all of their favourite shops as well as find a nice basket to put everything in, most good online hamper stores have such a wide range of hampers these days that you’re bound to find something that’s the right fit for your boo. And the good thing with going down this route is they will all be professionally presented and wrapped, and you can get it delivered to their workplace for extra brownie points!

4. A tea basket

While food baskets as gifts have been around for quite some time, a tea basket is sure to please a classy, worldly boyfriend or girlfriend. Tea samplers are a wonderful way to try out something new together – a fun and cozy activity for a chilly evening.

Simply package a variety of new tea, some honey and a pair of fun new mugs together for an amazingly thoughtful gift for the tea-lover in your life. After all, tea is the new "hot" beverage, with specialty tea companies springing up everywhere to the tune of $12 billion a year.

5. A his-and-hers clock

If you and your sweetheart currently live in different time zones or you simply spend a lot of time travelling – maybe he works in the mines or she travels to another city for business - consider getting a his-and-hers clock that offers up the time in multiple time zones to make coordinating phone calls easier. It is a practical gift that is also highly romantic, since every time they look at the clock, they'll think of you.

Another type of his-and-hers clock, and one which is even more romantic if you have babies on feeding schedules or dramatically different working hours, allows you to set your wake up time and sync it to a vibrating ring which you put on your finger - it will vibrate to wake you but not your partner.
Note - this Fandi Meng Ring clock is still in concept stage but talk about clever!

6. Something to recharge the batteries

You know how hard your partner works to keep you and your family ticking over – whether it’s long hours at the office or late nights with the kids, life can wear anyone’s batteries a little low. Let them know how much you appreciate the energy they spend by treating them to some pampering to put the spring back in their step (and the love in their eyes!). A voucher for a couple’s day spa package where the two of you can spend some relaxing and quality time together is just the ticket for romance!

Don't be afraid to look for unusual or interesting gifts this Valentine's Day. Whether you choose a personalised option or you go for something that represents your relationship or his or her hobby, there are plenty of choices out there for you. Try thinking beyond simple candies or flowers this Valentine's Day and start your hunt for the perfect unique gift this year.
