Are you skinny fat? Are you shying away from a bikini because of your love handles or tummy? Doctor Joanne Turner and her team at Skin Revision, counsel people every day who struggle with stubborn visceral weight. Here are Dr Jo's top 5 tips for a firmer body.
1. Eat a high protein meal for breakfast
Have a high protein meal for breakfast which includes grains. I recommend pulses and legumes; they are ultra LO-GI and contain insoluble fibre that keeps tummy bacteria happy to promote weight loss. An imbalance in the bacterial community of your intestine causes metabolic syndromes that leads to accumulation of fat around the stomach area and obesity.
Eating foods that keep your gut bacteria healthy is the single most important factor in altering whether you accumulate fat around your mid-section. Now matter how many sit ups you do, you will not shift that tummy if your diet is not right.
2. Drink 2 litres of water a day
For every 500ml of water you drink, your metabolism is increased by 30 per cent. Drinking 2 litres of water a day will make you feel fuller and help you cut down on snacks.
Once again anything that feeds your good intestinal bacteria impacts on metabolism. As well as high fibre foods, foods that create a positive environment for them such as adding vinegar to your diet in the form of salad dressings or condiments and foods that contain probiotics such as fermented foods, boost metabolism and decrease risk of abdominal fat.
3.‘Vanquish’ stubborn visceral fat
Vanquish is a brand new body sculpting treatment which is being rolled out across Australia. Vanquish is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment which uses radio frequency to melt centimetres off love handles and stubborn tummy areas. These healthy bacteria in fermented foods are wonderful to rebalance our own intestinal ‘microbiome'.
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a popular sweetener in dressings, sauces and canned vegetables. HFCS is terrible for someone trying to lose stubborn visceral weight. To decrease sugar cravings and boost weight loss I recommend substituting bottled dressings and marinades for a fermented food such as kimchi, sauerkraut or cider vinegar.
5. Add cinnamon to your tea or coffee
If you take sugar with your tea or coffee try substituting sugar for small doses of cinnamon. It will lower your blood sugar and make visceral weight loss easier.
