5 Tips for Losing Stubborn Body Fat

Say goodbye to your love handles and welcome a tighter tummy with these 5 expert tips.

Are you skinny fat? Are you shying away from a bikini because of your love handles or tummy? Doctor Joanne Turner and her team at Skin Revision, counsel people every day who struggle with stubborn visceral weight. Here are Dr Jo's top 5 tips for a firmer body.

1. Eat a high protein meal for breakfast

Have a high protein meal for breakfast which includes grains. I recommend pulses and legumes; they are ultra LO-GI and contain insoluble fibre that keeps tummy bacteria happy to promote weight loss. An imbalance in the bacterial community of your intestine causes metabolic syndromes that leads to accumulation of fat around the stomach area and obesity.

Eating foods that keep your gut bacteria healthy is the single most important factor in altering whether you accumulate fat around your mid-section. Now matter how many sit ups you do, you will not shift that tummy if your diet is not right.

2. Drink 2 litres of water a day

For every 500ml of water you drink, your metabolism is increased by 30 per cent. Drinking 2 litres of water a day will make you feel fuller and help you cut down on snacks.

Once again anything that feeds your good intestinal bacteria impacts on metabolism. As well as high fibre foods, foods that create a positive environment for them such as adding vinegar to your diet in the form of salad dressings or condiments and foods that contain probiotics such as fermented foods, boost metabolism and decrease risk of abdominal fat.

3.‘Vanquish’ stubborn visceral fat

Vanquish is a brand new body sculpting treatment which is being rolled out across Australia. Vanquish is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment which uses radio frequency to melt centimetres off love handles and stubborn tummy areas. In four treatments patients often lose between 6cm and 13cm from their abdomen.

Apart from Vanquish (which works by heating unwanted stubborn fat), there is Cryo-sculpting (freezing unwanted fat). These latest technologies are the only things that will spot reduce unwanted fat.  We all have pet areas where the fat accumulates and no matter how much we diet and exercise some fat is resistant. It varies between individuals, some accumulate on outer thighs, love handle areas, around the arms and men are especially prone to resistant fat around the tummy area. The Vanquish is best for the tummy area, the Cryo-sculpting is best for other areas.

4. Substitute bottled sauces with fermented food

Fermenting foods is an ancient process originally used to preserve foods. Fermented foods are basically produced by the action of natural bacteria such as lactobacillus and include making sauerkraut, kim chi, yoghurt and many cheeses. These healthy bacteria in fermented foods are wonderful to rebalance our own intestinal ‘microbiome'.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a popular sweetener in dressings, sauces and canned vegetables. HFCS is terrible for someone trying to lose stubborn visceral weight. To decrease sugar cravings and boost weight loss I recommend substituting bottled dressings and marinades for a fermented food such as kimchi, sauerkraut or cider vinegar.

5. Add cinnamon to your tea or coffee

If you take sugar with your tea or coffee try substituting sugar for small doses of cinnamon. It will lower your blood sugar and make visceral weight loss easier.

These are some great tips.

I know for years I struggled with a damaged metabolism which hindered my weight loss goals. I was stuck in a plateau and really couldn't budge with regard to my weight/appearance - even though I was on a low calorie diet and engage in cardio.

That being said, I am pleased to see that reducing calories was not on this list. Reducing calories is what cause me so much grief over the years.

Luckily, I found out about reverse dieting, completed the LayneNorton/Sohee Lee program (www.reversediet.net/redirect.php). This program truly allowed me to regain my life - as I could eat "normally" again. You can read more about my story here
