5 Reasons to Meditate

Spring's full of new beginnings, so it's a good time to start a meditation routine, which just might make you a happier person.

No one said it was going to be easy. Clearing your mind takes focus and practice, but dedicating only 10 minutes a day to making meditation a routine can benefit you in numerous ways. It can even make you happier by helping you nurture a more positive state of mind.

Here are a few more benefits of making meditation a priority in your life.

1. Stress reduction

In an age when stress is a widespread disease, everyone could use a little meditation to help decompress. If you need more convincing that this will help, the medical journal Health Psychology states that meditation reduces the stress hormone cortisol.

2. Better sleep

Lying awake at night with a case of busy brain, or dreaming of all the things you need to get done at work? Pre-bedtime meditation helps clear the brain of all that chatter, allowing you a high-quality, restful night's sleep.

3. Improve intimacy

A little mindfulness goes a long way toward making you a more compassionate person, and better in the bedroom. Mediating gets your out of your head and into the present moment, which will enhance your experience in the sack.

4. Increase awareness

In our current technological times, it can be difficult to separate yourself from your phone, computer or iPod, making it difficult to focus on any one thing. By practising mindfulness, you take a certain amount of time everyday to disconnect from all the distractions.

Like hitting the reset button on your laptop, meditation refreshes and revitalises the mind and improves your ability to focus and be in the present moment.

5. Strengthen the brain

Meditation is like a trip to the gym, for your brain. According to a study done at UCLA, practising mindfulness actually strengthens the connections between brain cells and may allow the brain to process information more quickly.
