4 Ways To Detox in a Day

Not so keen on abstaining from solids on a juice fast for several weeks? Well, there are other, faster ways to detox!

We’re all guilty of overindulging sometimes. But there comes a point when we have to put a plug on the overzealous eating and drinking and reign our health back in. But rather than opt for long-winded and laborious or potentially hazardous, hard-won detoxes, nurse practitioner and owner of Duquessa Skin Sanctuary, Katherine Millar-Shannon, says there are a few in-salon experiences that can cleanse the body, reboot the energy levels and set you back on a path to better health.

  • Steam Rooms

“Both relaxing and rejuvenating, steam rooms are a quick and efficient way for the body to be cleansed and detoxed both inside and out,” Katherine explains.

Benefits:

“Steam rooms increase the heart rate, improve circulation, open up your airways, which then improves your breathing and alleviates congestion,” Katherine says.

"This is highly beneficial for those that suffer from asthma and bronchitis, as it may assist with sinus relief."

Sweating in a steam room also assists in ridding your body of toxins and cleansing your skin, by opening pores and increasing lymphatic circulation. “The steam can also help to clear any impurities from the skin which is especially good for those who have pimples, congested or acne prone skin types,” Katherine says

Caution:

Do not stay in the steam room for too long! “Spending too much time in a steam room can cause dizziness and increase your heart rate," Katherine cautions. You also need to ensure you re-hydrate! 

  • Vitamin B12 Injections

Madonna is just one celebrity fan of this intravenously administered vitamin. “Vitamin B12 shots help bypass the system and allow for maximum absorption," Katherine explains. “B12 is nature’s energy boost!”

Benefits: 

B12 injections are said to increase energy and speed up your metabolism. It's also been linked to lifts in mood and peaked concentration levels, Katherine notes. “The B12 shot is a treatment which is in high demand amongst people who are looking to boost their immune systems and energy levels as it can help regulate sleeping patterns and appetite and reduce the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines,” Katherine explains. “This is seen as a bit of a wonder vitamin.”

Caution:

Vitamin B12 shots are prescription only treatments. Katherine urges any potential patients to seek professional advice before proceeding with a qualified provider.

  • Vitamin C Therapy

Also delivered intravenously, Vitamin C Therapy is beneficial to both the immune system and also good for giving you back that natural glow. Again, maximum absorption means faster results, which you can see and feel almost instantly, Katherine notes.

  • Colonic Irrigation

Katherine admits this sounds scarier than it is, but with fans including Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey, the benefits of flushing out toxins are well known. “A colonic irrigation can work wonders on releasing toxins and other nasties from your system,” assures Katherine. “Consider it just ‘flushing out’ the build up in your lower intestinal system.”

Benefits:

As the colon is cleansed, it pushes undigested waste through your system, clearing the way for proper nutrient absorption. “If waste remains in the body for too long, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and illness,” Katherine explains. “A clean colon allows undigested waste to pass easily through your system.”

“Releasing the toxins from your body is rejuvenating because it refocuses the energy usually used for forcing waste through your intestines to other parts of your body. People who have undergone colon detoxification say they have better blood circulation, more restful sleep and a boost in energy,” she adds.

A colon that is cleansed allows absorption of only water, vitamins and nutrients into the bloodstream. “Cleansing the colon with a detox diet can be the difference between feeling alert and not being able to focus,” Katherine points out. 

Caution:

Colonic cleansing should only per performed by a therapist qualified to perform such procedures, Katherine reveals.

She is also quick to point out that the above treatments aren’t for everyone, especially those with existing health issues, heart problems, the elderly or pregnant women. Seek medical advice before considering any of these treatments and if you are cleared to try them, stagger your clinic visits, as undergoing all in one day is not advised.
