Your Guide to Spring Gardening

With spring beginning to blossom (well, nearly), now’s the time to get back outdoors and start preparing your garden to ensure it looks refreshed and beautiful for the summer months.

Whether you’re looking forward to relaxing in your garden or are busily preparing your home for sale, the expert in tools and garden care products Earthcore recommends getting your hands dirty early, as a little hard work now will pay dividends through the budding summer months.

Many plants do 80 per cent of their growing during spring, so there’s no time to lose. Earthcore has the following top garden tips for ideal spring garden preparation, to help your garden get off to a blooming start:

1. Tool up

Before heading out into the garden, it’s important to select the right tools to make the job easy and put the pleasure back into gardening. Avoid added strain to your back and shoulders by investing in a range of long and short handled garden tools so you’re correctly equipped for any garden job. Best tools for the job: Earthcore’s range of long and short-handled tools, starting from RRP $9.00.

2. Spring cleaning

Take stock of the plants in your garden to determine which ones need some special attention to regain their former beauty and which may need to be removed to make way for new plantings. Check the health of your trees and shrubs – if any branches aren’t showing any leaves or buds, some good pruning will help to encourage new growth. Best tool for the job: Earthcore Professional Bypass Pruner with Pouch (RRP $25.25).

3. Re-potting

It’s extremely important to get all your re-potting done at the beginning of spring. Move any plants that have been in the same pot for more than two years and re-plant all plants that are outgrowing their containers to larger pots or into a garden bed. Don’t forget to nourish your plants in the process with a quality potting mix, slow-release fertiliser, mulch and lots of water. Best product for the job: Earthcore All Purpose Potting Mix 30L (RRP $6.90).

4. Sowing the seeds

For those who enjoy growing edible gardens, September is prime time to plant a luscious crop of salad greens and herbs to ensure there is plenty to harvest for those summer salads. Stagger successive plantings of summer vegetables like tomatoes and capsicums to ensure a long lasting crop. After all, there is nothing more satisfying than picking your lunch fresh from the garden. Best tool for the job: Earthcore Trowel Stainless Steel Moulded Handle (RRP $9.00).

5. Get “Fruit full”

Give citrus and other fruit trees plenty of encouragement in spring with a good boost of nutrients. There are some great products to enrich the soil after the harsh winter months to promote healthy growth and abundant crops from your trees. Best product for the job: Earthcore Fruit & Citrus Food 2.5kg (RRP $5.90)
