Top 5 Gardening Tips for Summer

Now is the perfect time to go in search of garden ideas ready for the summer, so we've put together a handy guide of projects you might want to undertake at this time of year.

Whether you've got a small urban garden to attend to or a more spacious area, there is no better time to get outside.

1. Treat your soil

Soil needs care and attention like any other part of your garden, so use the summer months to give it some treatment.

Mulch is a great way to boost its nutrients - not only will it help your existing plants thrive, but also prevent weeds from sprouting and reduce the soil temperature in winter.

2. Prune your trees

Pruning is something that typically needs to be done once a year to encourage new growth and ensure your trees stay in top condition.

Experts recommend that during their first year, trees should be pruned back by around a third.

3. Grow your own

No matter how big or small your garden might be, growing your own fruit, vegetables and even herbs can be especially rewarding.

This is a great summer project for the kids - ask them for their garden ideas and plant their favourite fruit and veggies. They'll enjoy them so much more knowing they've been grown in their own garden!

4. Start composting

Creating your own compost is great for the environment and it will encourage you to recycle food waste.

Assign a certain area of your garden to composting and you'll be surprised how quickly it mounts up - the best part is that you can then use it as your garden design!

5. Summer colours

If your garden could do with a new lease of life, add some vibrant summer colours.

Head down to your local garden centre or look online for inspiration - you'll be amazed at what you can achieve!
