Tiles for your Garden

Something we’re always aiming for is to create a living space which is beautiful and durable. And that is something decorative tiles have been doing for thousands of years making them a truly classic timeless design material.

Spain has a diverse and strong ceramic tradition which reached its peak in the work of Antonio Gaudi. And in Parq Guell in Barcelona you get to witness Gaudi’s incredible use of tiles in full flight and when you see this stuff it’s actually pretty overwhelming and you realise this guy had to be a complete and utter genius. To make the best use of curved surfaces, Gaudi used recycled ceramics from broken tiles, plates and cups to create a beautiful mosaic.

Traditionally Spanish Catalan roofs use ceramics tiles – they’re long-lasting, they require low maintenance, they’re water proof, they’re ice proof, the best thing - that they can be applied to the most beautiful undulating forms just like a wave roof. Tiles work so well in hallways, living spaces, offices, bedrooms. They’re easy to clean and the best thing is that they work like a lung. They hold the warmth when it’s cold and they cool the house down when it’s hot. Tiles are natural and practical and as a finish in your living spaces they do not promote bacteria growth or capture airborne allergens. Tiles don’t absorb external odours and have no inherent odour. So, anyone with pets will completely get this. Tiles are also great in the kitchen as they are extremely durable and resistant to stains and abrasions. They can also be non-flammable and fireproof.

And tiles are doing amazing things in contemporary architecture. It’s interesting to see the fluidity and movement that tiles can have. The Santa Caterina markets is a wonderful expression of this as the roof looks it’s a canvas that was gently dropped into place. Catalan architect, Benedetta Tagliabue was responsible for this exquisite design.

“We designed a colourful design on top of the roof because we really wanted the city to understand the joy that is developing inside the markets so what is happening inside, what is going in your eyes all these colours, all these forms, all these beautiful smells.”

The limitless possibilities for tiles will ensure their lasting contribution will bring beauty to our ever-changing living requirements.
