Brendan visited succulent-enthusiast Suzi Forge in Melbourne to find out what drives her passion for succulents.
Right now succulents are 'in' but for Suzi, they are more than just a passing phase. She got hooked when she started to grow them experimentally and found they grew easily and multiplied quickly. She loves that succulent gardens are foliage-orientated unlike English gardens, which are largely focussed on flowers. The shapes, balance of colours, skin colour and surface pigmentation of succulents combine to create an effect she finds captivating. But in particular, she loves their stamina.
Succulents are tough little battlers that have survived the trials and tribulations nature has thrown at them. It's very difficult to kill a succulent, Suzi says, unless you try so hard to make its life miserable that it gives up. All they need is a bit of light and a bit of water.
They are so easy to grow that they took over not just Suzi's home-life but also her working life when she opened up Succulence, a shop dedicated to the hardy little plants and Suzi's favourite home furnishings.
Suzi says that for her, gardens are a place for dreaming, where everything seems possible. Dreams don't always come true but you can always hope!
