New Garden Trend: Smart Grass

If you’ve got a small garden in an urban environment, you’ll most likely appreciate the challenges of a lawn. Often poor quality soil, shade and constant wear means that keeping a green square of turf is just a pipe dream.

The Europeans (particularly the Spanish) have used this synthetic form of grass for years. Not only is it easy to install and maintain, it actually looks pretty real and comes in a number of different looks and types so you can choose the one that’s best for your garden and use.

All the preparation needed is to have a flat surface (and if you’re grassing up to pavers or other surfaces the finished level will be about 40-50mm from the base) and remove any obstacles that aren’t permanent fixtures.

The Smart Grass Installation will first put down a sort of road base of crushed rock to get the levels right and ensure a bit of a fall to the flower beds or drainage points in your garden.

Then they simply roll out the green carpet, secure it with special steel pins and dump a load of sand over the top which is worked into the Smart Grass to weigh it down, give a bit of a cushion effect, a real look and feel and to get the blades to sit up.

It takes just a few hours for a small backyard and suddenly you’re looking out onto a lawn you never dreamed you’d have.

The best bit about it is that you can do anything to it… it’s great for pets and kids (simply remove and hose down any poo or bits of food, paint etc).

All it requires is a bit of a hair appointment every 6 weeks which consists of a brush to lift up any squashed bits!

The installers can also come round once a year and top up the sand or give it a bit of a brush with their mechanical brush again if required.

Smart Grass is less than $100/m2 supplied and installed and has a seven year installation and product guarantee.

I installed SmartGrass and it was a dismal and expensive failure. I have two dogs and explained to the salesman who visited and inspected the site that I wanted to provide a soft surface for my dogs where there were previously rocks in a shaded spot in the garden. He explained how perfect Smartgrass would be and how urine drains through and faeces can be picked up off the surface. Two weeks after installation, the smell of urine coming off the grass was so strong we thought we had a blockage in our sewerage. I invested another $400 in cleaning fluids in an attempt to rid the grass of the smell but ended up having to remove it completely. 10 months later, I am still fighting with SmartGrass Pty Ltd to get at least some of my money back. They say they guarantee their product, however, they don't specify what the guarantee covers. I've had to take my fight with them to Consumer Affairs and it looks likely to go all the way to VCAT. If you have dogs, do not even consider this product.
