After winning an Academy Award for his work on the film Babe, John Cox and his family settled in a piece of paradise called the Isle of Capri, about ten minutes walk from the centre of Surfers Paradise.
Their home is very down-to-earth and family-oriented, not at all how you might imagine a 'celebrity' home would look. John says he doesn't live a Hollywood lifestyle at all – they're more than happy with a relaxed casual Australian lifestyle.
John's a big kid at heart. Throughout the house his love of toys is obvious, with cupboards and bookshelves groaning under the weight of them. As much as possible is on display – John says he really doesn't understand the current craze for minimalism! He says he loves collecting movie memorabilia, as well as old cartoons such as Astro Boy.
20 minutes away is the Cox's studio, Creature Workshop, where John and his staff make all the animatronics, aliens and other creatures for their various films. This gives John the luxury of 4000 square feet of factory space where 99% of his big toys live. Most recently John worked on the set of the film Scooby Doo, making the animatronics and creatures.
John says he would never sell any of his pieces. He says a collector doesn't buy for profit, but because you feel you need to have that item.
