Even a small concrete space can become a green oasis.
Adding dimension is a key element in any successful outdoor makeover. You can even do it in areas that don't have soil, like courtyards, patios or balconies.
Adding pots and plants of varying sizes adds both depth and height to smaller areas.
In the Mt Macedon home, I put foliage plants like hellebores in the smaller pots. Then to create a canopy with larger pots, I used hydrangea and buxus.
Having greenery at different heights helps catch the eye, which creates space and ultimately makes it more inviting.
If you have empty wall space, you can still introduce plants with a green wall, or even a vertical garden. This also adds a bit of a wow factor.
Of course, no courtyard is complete without somewhere to sit and enjoy it. If you add an awning or umbrella, you have additional height to draw your eye up, which adds another layer and more dimension.
