How to get healthy soil and keep plants happy

Healthy soil means happy plants, and it's the easiest way to make sure your garden thrives.

The first thing on your checklist when it comes to looking after your plants is quality soil.

This is all the more important if you're splashing out on pricey mature plants to give your garden a sense of privacy and grandeur.

The best way to achieve healthy soil is with a mix of compost and animal manure. Homemade compost is fantastic and sustainable, but if you prefer to buy from a store there are several varieties on the market.

Compost and animal maure add fungus bacteria and microbes to your soil which gives plants a healthy base to grow from.

The more dynamic the soil, the more vibrant and strong your plants will be.

Healthy soil will help your plants resist pests and diseases, and will give them  brilliant leaves and blooms.

If you start with tip-top soil, then there’s a good chance you won’t need fertilisers.

But if you find your plants do need some additional health, there are plenty of fertilisers on the market, including specialty products for different types of plants.

Once you’ve got your soil in shape, it’s important to maintain it. Using mulch helps retain moisture in the soil.

It also has an insulating effect which helps to regulate temperature. This promotes strong healthy root growth, which is going to give your plants a long life.
