There is nothing like a backyard pond to provide a quiet, relaxing spot to sit during the summer months. Whether you are planning ahead, or want to get started today, there are several points to remember about building your own backyard pond.
The materials are all basically the same, but how you install them and what you do around the pond can make all the difference in the appearance of your backyard retreat. Use the tips below to help you create a backyard pond that will not be soon forgotten.
Map It Out
The first thing that you need to do before you rush out to buy supplies or start digging, is to map out where the backyard pond will be. This is especially important, because it determines what else you can do around the pond. If you have a small backyard, take that into consideration and be realistic about the space needs that a pond will have. For larger backyards, think about the regular activity in the yard and how installing a pond will alter the ability to do those activities. Once you have figured out where you want to install it, it is time to think about how you will enhance it.
Decorating the Pond Area
The idea that a backyard pond is just a hole in the ground filled with happy koi, is erroneous. The decorations around the pond are as important to the look and feel of the space as the size and the shape of the pond itself. Think about the type of stones or border that you would like to create around the edge of the pond. Large, flat stones are especially good, as they are aesthetically pleasing and offer a nice transition from space to space. Other items include water plants, such as lily pads and tall grasses. You may find that after a few months of your tall grasses being in existence, you have a whole host of other visitors, such as frogs, newts and salamanders. Their presence will just enhance the look and feel of your pond. Also consider how you will enjoy the pond. Will you need a place to sit? If so, decide where a bench can be placed. Any additional lawn or pond ornaments that you would like to include should be added into the plans before you begin creating the pond.
Creating the Pond
In order to create the pond, visit your local landscaping, home improvement or pond supply store. There you will be able to find the pond form, plastic barrier, water pump and all of the landscaping items you want to include in the pond's design. Follow the basic instructions that accompany the pond building items and decorate to your liking. Although the job is not technically difficult, it does require manual labor and a lot of digging.
Once you have created a beautiful backyard pond, it will quickly become your favorite place to sit and relax. Be sure to have the materials on hand that you will need to winterize it before cold winter starts. If you have fish in the pond, be prepared to bring them indoors to an inside tank during the cold temperatures.
