A contemporary, multi-levelled outdoor entertaining area presents itself as a true work of art.
The granite-paved alfresco area of this Perth property spills out from the home’s living areas, blending seamlessly with the borrowed landscape of the adjoining parklands and providing the perfect space for entertaining. Designed and built by Garden Artisans, the contemporary lowmaintenance outdoor living area makes the most of the available space and boasts an array of unique features.
The owners spent a lot of time considering how they wanted to use their outdoor living area. Says co-owner Kate: “While we knew what we wanted, we quickly realised that designing and executing a specific plan was a different matter, so we looked around for a professional landscape designer and installer. Garden Artisans sat down with us and talked about what features we wanted, what overall feel we were going for and what we needed out of the space we had,” adds the other owner, Darren.
“From here they drew up a detailed plan that showed what plants would go where, what structural and decorative features would be included and where our entertaining spaces would be.” The space Garden Artisans had to work with is viewed from two separate rooms of the house (the bedroom and the open-plan kitchen/living room) so the designers, Greg and Sandra Young, needed to create two separate but equally appealing aspects. The main focal point of the design is a water feature and plinth (clad in a thin dark-red mosaic tile), which can be viewed from both the bedroom and kitchen/living room. “The tiles are exclusively imported by a Perth tiler who uses them in his work but does not on-sell them,” says Sandra. “We really wanted to use these tiles as their true darkred colour matches the kitchen splashbacks.
After extensive negotiation we were able to source a one-off supply and, as a result, this garden has a water feature that is one of a kind.” Two levels were introduced and raised garden beds, filled with water-wise plants, built to create different height aspects. “One of the raised garden beds was painted in the same green colour as the feature wall in the living area, and one alfresco feature wall was painted in the same chocolate colour as the internal furnishings, creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection,” says Greg. The owners can’t speak highly enough of Garden Artisans.
“We thoroughly recommend the team at Garden Artisans to anyone interested in achieving high-quality results. Garden Artisans designed and built a practical, beautiful, stylish and contemporary outdoor extension to our home; it is thrilling to come home to it every day. They listened and they delivered professional results,” says Kate. The judges of the 2011 Awards of Excellence, held by the Landscape Industries Association of WA, were equally impressed with this 50sqm project, naming Garden Artisans a finalist in two categories: Residential Garden Designer up to 250sqm, and Residential Landscaping Contractor $40,000- $120,000.
