Concrete - you either love it or you hate it. Brendan loves it. Well, he does when it's done in a certain way, like concrete pavers and concrete pots, especially if they are the original 1950's ones. The modern take is Hannah Parry and her beautiful concrete pots.
Concrete is one of those materials that has been around forever; it was once the height of garden couture, and then it became the scourge of the suburban backyard, one minute it's cool, the next uncool. Well it's still around in all its many forms and fabrications and due to its incredible functionality it is the supreme building material of our time.
It's no surprise that the Greeks and Italians love their concrete gardens with statues and fountains and columns. With not a blade of grass in sight, these gardens are reminders of past homelands, and are now considered by their local councils important and relevant and certainly worth preserving.
Brendan has always loved original concrete pots from circa 1950's. They are becoming increasingly hard to find, but if you're lucky you can still pick up the odd one at auction or second hand shops. Hannah Parry is a contemporary concrete pot designer, who now has developed a smooth and refined technique to making pots even though the character of being hand-made still remains. Other examples of cutting edge concrete design is a company called Aludean who make water features and pots and other outdoor furniture pieces out of a dark dyed concrete type material.
It's no surprise that one of Brendan's favourite types of paver is concrete. There seems to be no other product available that quite matches its sleekness, versatility, and affordability. But even though they come in all sizes and varying shades, sometimes you still can't quite find what you're looking for. Brendan is going to make his own concrete pavers which will be circular in form. He will do this by pouring concrete into some moulds and those moulds will be woks believe it or not. The bonus of the wok moulds is that the pavers won't be completely flat but will be bulging and mound-like instead for added interest.
