Choosing Outdoor Furniture

Inside Out magazine has done the all the legwork to bring you the ultimate guide to outdoor furniture. With tips to selecting, storing and caring for your tables, sun lounges and chairs, all you have to do is look forward to a stylish summer filled with outdoor entertaining.

Selecting Outdoor Furniture

Create outdoor ambiance with the latest sun lounges, tables and chairs – including new technology synthetic weaves that are virtually maintenance free and weatherproof and, for a more organic look, durable teak pieces.
When putting together your outdoor room, the first trick is to keep big furniture pieces visually light, allowing the garden view to take centre stage and to add a delicate sculptural element to your outdoor space. Think about your environment; for instance, balconies in high-rise apartments can experience very strong winds, and Inside Out recommends investing in heavy furniture that won’t blown away. Alternatively, light plastic items often include water or sand-filling to add weight.

Caring for Metal Furniture

Keep metal pieces free from dirt and airborne pollution, and you’ll add years to their lifespan. It’s as simple as washing down the framework every six months with soapy water. Powder-coated metal furniture will corrode if positioned on grass, dirt or leaves for long periods of time. Act early on small chips and scratches with a quick touch up of automotive paint.

Caring For Timber Furniture

Old timber furniture can be restored using special wood cleaning products to remove mould and ingrained dirt before re-oiling. If you’re leaving timber furniture outdoors, then you need to re-oil every three to six months. Left untreated it will turn a silver-grey and has a greater chance of cracking and splintering.
