Cheap Country Garden Tips

So you love the look of a garden with earthy, aged materials that give a grand ambience and character, but don't have the money or time to create your own? Fake it! Here are our easy, accessible, quick and inexpensive options we achieved in our suburban garden.

Rust Walls

The majority of existing boundaries in Michelle's garden are Colourbond and not very inspiring. So rather than waste anymore time and effort in covering them with planting we're going to construct a freestanding timber and fibro fence, which will be painted with an instant rust and interspersed with Nature Reed.

Creating a rust affect:

  1. Apply two coats of Porters Paint undercoat, allow drying time.
  2. Apply two coats of Porters Paint Liquid Iron, allow drying time.
  3. Apply the first coat of Porters Paint Instant Rust (this is effectively Hydrochloric acid so read the direction before applying). The number of Instant Rust applications will depend on the desired rust effect you wish to create. In our case it took four coats of Instant Rust to achieve this effect.

Tips

We sprayed water over the Instant Rust to induce the rusting process and create a weathered look.

Slate Wall

In the tradition of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, we're going to conceal the shed with what looks like a stacked stone wall. While Mr Lloyd Wright would have had people slaving for weeks constructing walls by stacking thin slivers of slate but not us. We're using Eco Concepts stacked stone cladding. These tiles are all stone and are split on the face, with a clean flat sawn finish on the back, allowing the product to be easily adhered (to suitable surfaces) just like a tile. The brick wall took a day to build, and the slate tiles took two men a day to install.

Laundry False Walls

To start out with there is nothing concealing the laundry and rather than literally leaving your dirty laundry for the world to see, we're going to screen it with false walls. This is really to conceal the entry while allowing easy access. This will be constructed with blue board and treated with Porter's Industrial Lustre in Base Metal, thus unifying the boundaries and palette.
