Companion planting is a technique in gardening and agriculture where certain plants are grown together with the aim of not only deterring pests - but encouraging healthy growth as well.
Companion plants can also play a role by attract beneficial insects – especially bees that aid in pollination – and increase flavor & help balance nutrients in the soil.
Some examples of companion planting matches are:
- Basil with tomatoes (plus marigold to attract bees)
- Nasturtiums with brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli etc)
- Onions & spring onions with carrots
- Chives with apples & cucumbers
- Kohl Rabi with onion
- Leek with strawberries
- Parsley with sweet corn
