Banana Lounge

The banana lounge - it hardly resembles a banana at all really (I mean how comfortable could it be to lie on it with your legs in the air?). However, it has become the icon of garden furniture and is a timeless classic in anyone's book. Little has changed form-wise since the inaugural prototype, and it is still as popular today as it was 50 years ago.

The banana lounge was probably developed from the wooden slatted steamer deck chair (from cruise liners) sometime in the late 1950's in the USA. At this time advances in materials technology which occurred as a result of WW11 made possible a new generation of lawn furniture. While aluminium would corrode over time, it did so much more slowly than other materials available. Plastics, especially vinyl, were becoming more and more durable and, during the 50's, they were being adapted for many uses around the home and in the yard. Plastic lawn and patio furniture was inexpensive, and best of all, it was available in the brilliant colours that people of the 50's wanted. Also the plastics industry of the time developed UV absorbers to prevent ultraviolet radiation from the sun discolouring plastics. And so the birth of the banana chair as we know it today.
