Apply to be on River Cottage Australia!

EXCITING NEWS! River Cottage is coming to Australia! And this is your chance to be the new 'Hugh!'

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is a chef, self-sufficiency expert and “real food” campaigner, known for his back-to-basics philosophy.

He’s on a mission to spread his mantra of good food, sustainability and passion for local ingredients to the Australian people.

After more than 15 years on his English River Cottage farm, Hugh is heading to the other side of the world in search of someone ready to take on the challenge of becoming a self-reliant farmer in a rural location.

Hugh will pass everything he’s learned to a willing “Aussie” disciple. The new “Hugh” will have the same passion and verve for living off the land, someone who can take his good living principles and build on them, someone who can take forward the message of River Cottage and lay the ground for a sustainable future.

If you think you have what it takes, apply now!

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall said: "It’s brilliant to be taking River Cottage Down Under. Australia’s a country I have long wanted to get to know. We’ve had some lovely Aussies visit us here at River Cottage in Devon and it’s high time I repaid the compliment.

“I know there are great things happening with local, seasonal wild foods and I can’t wait to tap into them. And I’m looking forward to meeting some Aussie Hughs. At least I think I am!"

Fearnley-Whittingstall will visit Australia for the first time when production commences in early 2013.

I am so dissapointed that I only just found out about this. I have watched all of the River Cottage episodes and this gave me the inspiration to leave the hussle and busstle of the Gold Coast and buy a property in regional Australia (near Goondiwindi) to grow my own food, raise my own livestock etc. I have regular bus tours through my property to see my farm and experience things like solar cooking, wicking garden beds, chicken tractors, raising goats etc. You can see some of my videos at or my products at or you can follow me on facebook by searching for Naughty-Goat-Soap - Did I mention im dissapointed to miss the boat on this! Damn damn damn kicking myself!

I love River Cottage & I hope Hugh runs some
courses while in Australia. I love to cook and preserve
Foods but we are a long way from self-sufficiency.
However I aspire to being self sufficient one day.
Every day, with Hugh's help is another step forward.
My son catches fish which he scales and I fillet. I bottle
Seasonal produce. Cheers Kim

I am a more recent fan and went to River Cottage in Dorset last month for a midwinter feast! It was so exciting to be there and I am now back in Aus and growing veggies in raised planters in the back garden of our block of units in Five Dock. I'm hoping Hugh will visit some of us (me included) with his show to see how his work has inspired us into action in Australia!

I have followed Hugh's exploits with River Cottage since '99 and been inspired to embrace his philosophies as much as possible. As chef and organiser, feeding 150 people 20 restaurant quality dishes with well over 95% if the ingredients foraged, hunted, gifted or pinched from a 10km radius at the Bemboka Banquet last year is a great example. As a retired chef I'd love to apply to be the next Hugh but I reckon coming up 58 is a tad too old for TV wallahs to invest in me...So I guess I'll just have to keep on playing with my food at Stroudover Cottage - my River Cottage!
