Warm Up Your Interiors with Navy and White

Navy paired with amazing white textures is the perfect complementary scheme for a contemporary interior look. Here's how to create that perfect cozy space, all year round.

This year we’ve experienced one of the coldest winters in decades but rather than wallow over the blustery weather, I like to embrace the chill and spend more time cosied up on the couch or catching extra z’s in bed. No matter what the weather, it’s always important to create a space you love, which can be easily achieved with a fresh lick of paint.

Navy is one of the hottest trend colours at the moment and, while visiting a trade fair in Atlanta, I saw it paired with amazing white textures – the perfect complementary scheme for a contemporary interior look. Winter might be quickly fading, but navy is a theatrical, bold and sophisticated colour that is perfect for creating a cosy space that makes you want to hibernate all year round.

Choosing a navy hue for your walls creates a refined background for layers of white and textured neutrals incorporated in your sofas and soft furnishings.

In a bedroom you can create a different look by painting either one wall or all the walls in a navy hue. I would suggest painting one wall first so you can get a feel for the way the colour suits the space. Once you’ve had a chance to embrace the colour in your bedroom, you can feel more confident in coating the rest of the walls in the same hue. Style the look with white linen and soft greens that will pop against the dramatic, dark background and create a haven for lingering inside.

Your bathroom or ensuite may be an unexpected place to add drama, but it is actually a great opportunity to add a dose of navy and balance it with white tiles and fixtures. These two pictures show two ways to create an impact: you can choose to flood the walls with colour in the bathroom or use it on an open wall at the entry to create intrigue.

To give a navy and white scheme a fresh and crisp look, keep it more monochromatic and let navy be the star. Mix it up with stripes, like you see in this rug, and other simple patterns to make sure the look has some energy to it. Team it with black and white photos gallery style or a large piece of art as a focal point.

To create a softer feel, you can team the bold hue with accessories in off white neutrals and popular soft pastels, like tangerine, salmon and pinks. Add layers of long pile cushions or rugs, and copper or rose gold accessories to add further visual warmth to the interior.

While navy and blue might feel like a wintry, moody palette, this complementary scheme is perfect for your home all year round.
