Wallpaper Ideas

Plain, painted and plastered walls are no match for the beauty, durability and personality wallpaper conveys. Forget those old images of gaudy red and gold velvet embossed designs. It's the new designs that are leading the way in the wallpaper revival. Shannon looks at a few ways of using wallpaper to liven up your home.

Feature Wall

Covering only one wall with wallpaper gives a striking, contemporary effect to any room. It's also good for slowly easing into the idea of wallpaper, before going all the way! Shannon has chosen an older style classic design, at $76.50 a roll, it's very affordable, taking 1 ½ rolls to cover this wall.

Strip of Wallpaper

Here's a way of using wallpaper without drowning out the whole room. Apply one strip of paper down the centre of the wall. This also turns the wall into a feature, but with a totally different effect. This paper is screen-printed, one of the smooth, slick contemporary designs of paper now available. This paper was $237 for a 10m roll, and Shannon used 3m for a strip.

Wallpaper Screen

Give an old screen new life, by covering it in decorative, luscious wallpaper. Not only does it double as a room divider, it's also a good option for those who are renting and still want to indulge. Shannon's chocolate coloured paper with gold printed butterflies cost $25 per metre, and she used 5m.

Framed Wallpaper

Some of the vintage wallpapers are so opulent and loud they would be too overbearing for a whole wall. Instead, have a small piece framed and display it as a piece of art to brighten up a wall. Our pieces cost $80 plus $360 for the framing.

Painted Wallpaper

Stripping wallpaper is hard work. A cheaper and much easier option is to paint over the existing wallpaper. Of course, your paper needs to be in good condition and not peeling away from the walls. Our Wattyls paint cost $40 for a 4 litre tin.

Leftover Wallpaper

If you're wallpapering your home, you are bound to have some left over. Don't throw these scraps away. Cover your writing journals with them, make a lampshade out of it, or just cut up squares and put them in picture frames. This is especially effective if you frame five or six different types of precious vintage papers.

Things to consider

  • Once you've chosen your patterned wallpaper, pick a background colour in the design to use as a guide for decorating the rest of the room, such as curtains, sofa colour or carpet colour.

  • Raise a low ceiling by using a paper that has a vertical striped pattern.

  • Make a large room more intimate by using rich, dark and large patterned papers.

  • Wallpaper is a great idea for the nursery. Babies will be visually stimulated by colour and patterns.

  • Cover the front panel of an old dresser to give it a new lease of life.
