If you plan on tackling those big jobs around the exterior of your home, Charlie Albone shares his tips and advice.
It's hard to know when to call in the professionals and what you're capable of doing around the home. You may be a dab hand at demolition, but not so experienced when it comes to dealing with rotting decks.
The most important thing to consider is your safety and the safety of those around you. Also - if it's looking like an overwhelming task, don't hesitate to call in the professionals.
Guttering is a tricky one, as is anything with a ladder because you need to be extra careful. I’ve fallen off the top of a ladder doing hedges before and it hurts – a lot!
You should always keep your guttering as clean as possible. With mine, I tend to climb up onto the roof and secure myself onto the roof, instead of doing it from the ground down.
If you're going to install new guttering, I think it's a good idea to get the professionals in, just the same as if it’s to repair a small hole. It can be tempting to do a small cut and patch job, but err on the side of caution and get any repairs done by a professional.
When you’ve got rotting decks it's tempting to just remove the decking boards and replace them, but if the frame is also rotting you’ll just end up with the same problem again - and pretty quickly.
It’s pretty easy to remove decking yourself, but the trick is to not go too gung-ho. Once you start swinging that sledgehammer things start to go everywhere… so just take your time and take it apart in the opposite order to which it went together.
Knocking things down can be a lot of fun, but dangerous too! First, you’ll need to determine if the walls you are knocking down are load-bearing – before you smash through them.
It’s also a good idea to separate your waste out as much as you can because you will save money, and it’s also better for the environment. Divide it into concrete, green waste and mixed waste. If you suspect any asbestos, stop immediately and call in the professionals.
It's essential you take care of yourself when performing this kind of job, as well. You'll want to forge ahead and do as much as you can, as quickly as possible, but take care not to exert yourself by lifting too much.
You’re better off doing a little lifting at a time and working for longer than you are using maximum force to get the job done as quickly as you can.
