Find out why there’s more to choosing a colour scheme for your home than meets the eye.
How often have you found yourself sitting in a dull, grey room and found your mood also becoming dull and grey? And yet, neutral colours, like grey, are the staples of basic home decoration, right?
Even though we’re exposed to a myriad of different colours all day long, every day, few of us truly understand the psychology between the colour we see and our brain’s responses to it. Indeed, even scientists don’t truly understand colour psychology. But regardless of the howsand whys, it’s a proven fact that certain colours not only affect our mood in certain ways, but they also set the mood.
But what colours influence what moods?
Warm colours: are colours with warm undertones, such as reds, oranges and yellows. Radiant and cosy, these colours appear to advance, so they make small rooms seem smaller and large rooms more intimate. For small rooms, consider pairing a warm colour with cool or neutral colours to avoid closing the space in. Reds also stimulate your appetite, which is why so many fast food restaurants use a healthy dose of red in their logos and outlets.
Cool colours: are colours with cool undertones, like blues, purples and greens. Cool colours appear to recede, so they make small rooms look larger. But while these colours have a calming effect, they can also make a room seem colder, so it’s best to avoid using cool colours in rooms with very little natural light.
Neutral colours: such as white, grey and black can have either warm or cool undertones, which means that while they can add balance to a space, they should also be used with caution. Overusing a neutral colour scheme can leave a room looking bland and boring.
