Nursery Decorating

In the beginning they are just a bump, but before a child has even made an entrance, parents are faced with their first dilemma – the nursery.

A part of you thinks, it's only temporary so we needn't go overboard, and the other part is thinking, they are so special, we need to have whatever it takes. Now before you run out and break the bank, we show you three key pieces and suggest three nursery looks.

You'll need a cot, whatever style takes your fancy, just make sure you invest in a good mattress.

Change Table
A change table will last you about three years, depending on when your baby gets out of nappies – look for one that incorporates storage.

Comfortable Chair
Not forgetting mum, a comfy chair for feeding is essential, especially when your newborn needs feeding every two to four hours!

Now you have your three pieces, here are three different nursery styles to consider:

The gentle way to ease your child into the world A traditional nursery has a soft and nurturing feel about it, from the soft colours (generally pastels) on the walls, to the white wicker furniture. This look is all about creating a safe haven that will soothe your child's soul.

For those who want their nursery to reflect the rest of the house. A modern nursery is a neutral, no fuss space that has an industrial like edge. This style of room is for parents who are very design aware and would like their baby's room to reflect the rest of the house.

A colourful space with lots of activity. A funky nursery is one that is full of colour and texture. The idea of this style of decorating is to stimulate your child, but be careful not to over-stimulate. Red is definitely one colour to avoid, whereas blues are known for their calming effect.

The mobiles we have chosen are a little different from the 'norm', but they still achieve the same objective of entertaining and stimulating your child:
  • rose flowered fairy lights

  • Modern – silver spray painted paper lanterns

  • Funky – colourful mobile

Baby's nursery should feel tranquil and calm, and above all, safe. You don't have to cover the walls with pictures and trinkets, but you and baby will benefit from a few simple pieces to add interest to the room.
