Has one of your rooms become more of a dumping ground than a purposeful multifunctional room? Go from cluttered to multifunctional with designer Richard Randall’s tips for maximising space in a multifunctional room on this episode of from 60 Minute Makeover.
How to address a room that has many functions and little identity
• Use all available space to its potential with creative storage solutions – avoid furniture that takes up a lot of floor space.
• Assess whether the furniture in the room is too big for the space. E.g. if you are using the room as a work space, choose a desk that is proportionate to the room size. Or if the room is also used as a sleeping facility, ensure the sofa bed retractable and compact. A great idea is to find a sofa that doubles up as storage space. (See Fact Sheet for Ep 18)
• Aim to achieve BALANCE in the space by shifting furniture and buying furniture better suited to the space. Consider the layout – maximize the space by using all parts of the room efficiently.
• If your room is big enough, establish zones in the room. This can be achieved with different colours on the walls, lighting, wallpapers and so on, and ensures that each function of the space has its own unique identity.
