15 Inspiring kitchen pendant lighting ideas

Lighting can make or break a room even your home, so the pressure's on to pick the right pendant lights. Especially, when it comes to the kitchen, aka the busiest room in the house, as you need enough light to prepare a meal without slicing a finger, but not so much that you feel like you’re performing surgery with zero ambience.

If you're a newcomer to the world of lighting, you may want to brush up on the types of lighting that will work in your home.

Lighting can make a room feel bigger than it actually is and set the tone of the whole room. Here are our three top tips for getting the pendant light right.

Firstly, choose a light with a dimmer-switch, Neale Whitaker from Love It or List It Australia recommends “adding dimmers will let you adjust the light depending on the time of day or the mood you're trying to create.”

Secondly, suspend pendant lights approximately 30 inches above the bench to create an intimate and cozy feel.

Now comes the fun part - picking the light itself! In all honesty there isn’t a one size fits all approach and the best thing is that pendant lights are a relatively inexpensive way to give a kitchen an instant lift. Here are 15 inspiring ideas for kitchen pendant lighting.

1. Copper pop

Copper drop pendants are a striking, timeless feature! “While they feel very modern and edgy, the copper colour offers a warmer look than most metals,” Shaynna Blaze commends.

2. White and bright

A white kitchen with stainless steel looks brighter and bigger, because these surfaces reflect light. Use pendant lighting on an island bench and downlights around the rest of the kitchen.

3. Gourmet glass

Using glass gives your kitchen a “clean slate” allowing you to make boulder interior choices in the rest of the space. “Clear glass is great because it reflects the interior decor without overwhelming it. It works great in most rooms - and it the most cost effective!” host of Deadline Design, Shaynna Blaze explains.

4. Brassy tones

Brass offers a warmth that is perfect for you to use in your kitchen. Continue using brass detailing throughout the room, on the chairs and handles or like with this rangehood.

5. Modern Industrial

Industrial style homes and kitchens in particular radiate a clean, polished finish. Shaynna agrees that “this style is creeping further into domestic environments. People are seeking out alternative materials to make their homes unique.”

6. Coastal chic

Dip your toes in the coastal design world by adding different shades of white to your kitchen. This goes for your pendant lights too! Avoid anything too bulky and and don’t forget to add some natural timbers to your spread.

7. White minimalist

One of the biggest trends of 2019, minimalism doesn’t have to be boring. These simple white pendant lights emit enough light to give the kitchen a warm welcoming glow.

8. Rustic country

Play with exposed timber beams and country styling with rustic details like these pendant lights. Hung from cast iron chains they compliment the country styling of this kitchen.

9. Classic Black and White

You can’t go wrong with a classic black and white kitchen. They offer a great base to play with and are perfect for rentals and those looking for a quick sale.

10. Hamptons style

Add a touch of lux to a white Hamptons kitchen with black detailing. Think gas stove tops, cupboard handles and most importantly pendant lighting. Look for something simple and not overpowering as you want all of the black detailing to shine through not just your shiny pendant lights.

11. Texture talk

What’s better than hero-ing one texture? Adding multiple to your space is a great way to create warmth. Choose tones that work together nicely like this island bench and splashback combination.

12. Homey home

You can’t top an eclectic family home. This kitchen plays with vintage pieces like the sideboard and modern trends like the light timber benchtop to create a warm and inviting kitchen.

13. Classic twist

This classic home kitchen has the pendant light that dreams are made of. Whilst practically it doesn’t offer the light you need to mison-plus if ties every element in the kitchen together perfectly.

14. Modern country

These three pendant lights above the kitchen sink make a statement without taking away from the rustic shelves and marble-look cabinetry.

15. Golden glow

The use of pendant lighting not only above the centre island but also the dining table and sinks offers a warm homey feel to this otherwise simple kitchen. Using the same style of pendants in different variations offers a much needed cohesiveness.
