Kid's Bedroom Makeover

It's almost a luxury these days to have a spare room if you have children, but Shannon needed one for when her mother stays. So her two children Innez and Joey are going to have to share Joey's room. Luckily Shannon has a great idea that maximises space with style.

Because Joey's bedroom wouldn't accommodate two separate single beds plus all the cupboards, desks, and storage for toys that children need, Shannon has designed her own all-in-one bedroom and cupboard unit. It's divided down the centre with each child having their own side consisting of bed on top, cupboards, and desk below. In the middle are the steps, angled like a slippery dip, with hand and foot holes for the children to climb up into their beds.

For colours, Shannon has chosen aqua, red and white so it's neither too boyish or girly, nor too babyish in style. Neutral, practical, fun, safe and functional, she's come up trumps!

Things to consider

• Custom-made furniture is not cheap, but you get exactly what you want, and can include any little feature for that personal touch. Shannon's piece cost $8,800 and took two days to install.

• You need to have some idea on what you want. Do your research in magazines and books. This will get your creative juices flowing and help you decide what to include in your design.

• Take particular note of the dimensions of pieces, especially in relation to your children's dimensions! Think about the materials you'd like to use and what colours.

• Next, you need to do some sketches, and for most, this is the trickiest bit. But it's the only way to translate your ideas to the carpenter, and for you to see what the piece will actually look like.

• Ask your carpenter to fine-tune any elements of your design that aren't really do-able, and be prepared to lose or change your favourite little bits!

• Shop around for quotes, and let your carpenter know you're doing that. Don't go with the first quote you get, try and get three for comparison.

• Make sure your carpenter comes highly recommended, and get some sort of assurance in writing that he agrees to finish the job for the agreed amount and within a specified time frame.

• As much as she likes a red wall, Shannon chose Porters Paint in Aqua low sheen acrylic instead, as aqua is a lot more cool, calming and relaxing.

• Storage is important for every age group, and you need as much as possible. Kids should get used to the idea of packing up, whether it's their toys or drawing things. Try to make the storage pieces look fun, to encourage them to actually use them!
