Selling Houses Australia

The holiday that nearly ended Charlie's career!

As Season 13 of Selling Houses Australia comes to an end, we're enjoying re-living some golden moments with our three hosts.

But, believe it or not, we almost didn’t see Charlie on our screens as part of the Selling Houses Australia team.

In a recent Instagram live chat hosted by Shaynna Blaze, Charlie revealed that his decision to audition was thanks to his ex-girlfriend.

“I had a girlfriend before my beautiful wife, as most people do, and we had recently split up,” he explained.

“I got an email to try out for a screen test and I told her look, I’m going to try out for this show and she said you’ll never do it and if you do do it you’ll be really shit at it.

“And that just spurred me on to do it.”

But when it came to sending in his audition tape, Charlie thought nothing of it.

“I did my video on a budget camera and sent it in late, like two or three days late,” he said.

“And that was it, I thought nothing of it and didn’t think I got it.”

He was later told that producers had someone else in mind, so he decided to focus on getting over his recent break-up by going on a trip to Thailand with his brother for a couple of weeks.

The day before he was due to arrive back in Australia, he received an email asking if he could come in for a screen test.

“I got an email when I was over there saying, actually we think you might be quite good. Can you come in tomorrow and do a screen test and I said that’s fine, but I’m in Thailand,” he said.

“I told them I land in the morning, so if you can wait for me to land I’ll come in and we can do it and we did it.

“I’d had a few beers the night before - as you do - but hey, it all worked out.”

Despite never meeting each other before they started filming the first episode, Andrew, Shaynna and Charlie clicked right from the start and the rest is history.

Much like his successful audition for Selling Houses Australia, the start of Charlie’s landscape career also happened somewhat by accident.

“So it’s an interesting story of how I got into landscape design,” Charlie says.

“One day on the way to the pub I witnessed a car crash. A drunk driver smashed into the front gates of this English country manor house.

“I went in the next day and said I’d seen what happened. And the owner said to me ‘oh you don’t know anyone your age who’s interested in gardening because I need someone to help me out with the grounds’.

“And I said, well I can give you my weekends if you want? And that’s really where my passion for plants and English country gardens started.”

Charlie has come a long way since starting out as a maintenance gardener.

During his 13 years on Selling Houses Australia, he’s gone from being a single landscape gardener to a married man with two young children, a successful international business and TV career.

And while recent years have becoming more demanding on his time, thanks to international and domestic travel with two young children, Charlie says his success is greatly due to his wife, Juliette.

“It all works because I have an amazing wife who puts up with me really,” he says.

“The last couple of series got really tricky with travelling.

“But at the end of the day I really love what I do, I really do.”
