5 ways to update your living room for under $100

Give your home a quick facelift and still be under budget.

The living room is the centre of a home where families and friends gather. It's the hub where everyone meets to share experiences, which is why it's important to keep the heart of the house ticking. With 125 million products available from Amazon Australia, Chelsea Thomas from I Heart Bargains shares her top picks that will shift the mood and lift ambience - without breaking the bank.

It's all about light

"Candles will automatically add a serene feel to the space," Chelsea says. "Create a natural source of mood lighting in your living room by placing some candles on your coffee table or mantelpiece." For added aroma, Chelsea recommends scented candles to bring a sense of calm.

While candles are easy additions to the home, they can get worn out quickly so it's worth investing in durability. As Chelsea tells, "If you’re wanting a candle that will last the distance, try the slow burn Essano Home Candle Sweet Pea & White Orchid."

Textured furnishings

"Adding textured layers to your furnishings will immediately bring warmth to the space," Chelsea reveals. "It’s good to have a couple of throw rugs handy for cosy nights. Choose a neutral colour so the style doesn’t date over time and don’t be afraid to mix and match fabrics and colours."

While cotton is always versatile and good for warmer seasons, Chelsea recommends faux fur and wool for the cooler months.

Sleek appliances

Whether it's super hot or completely freezing, bulky applicances can easily overpower a room. For winter, Chelsea recommends to save on gas and electricity by warming up the rooms you tend to reside in.

"Oil heaters are the most effective way to heat a room quickly and they can pack away quite easily if you don’t have a lot of storage space," she shares. "There are some very good-looking options under $100. I bought this slick, black design from Amazon, which fits right in with my lounge room, and easily tucks away when it's not in use."

Coffee table books

If you've got a bare surface in the middle of a space, Chelsea's tip is to add some personality to it and make the environment seem a bit more worn. "A collection of books always make a house more homely," Chelsea explains. "Stack a variety of books near some plants or on a coffee table to add some character and a talking point into the room."

Greenery, always

This tip is fail-safe, and will add life to any space. As Chelsea recommends, "Hand pick some greenery from your garden and arrange a pretty bunch of florals into a vase. A stoneware vase can be simply styled next to some personal ornaments, or a candle and a stack of magazines."

For some depth, mix garden flowers in with some earthy greenery. "Flowers will always breathe life into a space. If you do use heating during winter, remember to give the stems a chop and change out the water more regularly, because they, just like us, will get dehydrated with increased heat."
