Now's the time to switch up your interiors by fusing period pieces with a modern touch!
Mixing modern and period features can sometimes be a difficult balancing act. But if it's done right, you can create a striking yet effortless look.
It doesn't matter whether you live in a modern home and want to introduce some heritage charm, or have an older home that needs some updating - you can combine these two styles to create gorgeous interiors.
One way to make a modern piece feel comfortable in a traditional home is to choose something with similar shapes elsewhere in the house.
Repeating the same line, shapes or textures helps create a cohesive feel.
With period pieces in a more modern home, the important point is to compliment them, rather than create a contrast.
Make the period piece the hero of the space, using neutral colours around it. If it’s a paintable surface, think about painting period features in a similar shade to its surroundings.
This is what I did with the wall vents and the fireplace here in Fulham. It creates a more modern ambience while still maintaining the original character.
When in doubt, take the minimalist approach. That way your feature pieces won't be competing and your home won't look busy or cluttered.
