How To Decorate Your Home with Velvet

There’s something timeless and eternally alluring about velvet - it’s a fashion stalwart that has been reserved for the rich, and breathes an opulent, romantic glamour and theatre to a room.

Velvet commands its own definitive sense of chic and brings a pop of colour and lustre to cool tone-rooms, or can equally add warmth, depth and texture to an interior space.

Influenced by the Elizabethan era, 'the velvet touch' gives a rich and decadent opulence with timeless elegance that will stand the test of time.

We spoke to the founder of Incy Interiors, Kristy Withers, to uncover the best ways to decorate with velvet.

1. A Velvet Headboard

Velvet headboards add strength and regal romance your room. The cushy appearance and textural interest provide a great centre piece for a room, while not being too overwhelming.

2. Velvet Cushion Covers

Create an optical illusion and extra layers of lush by mixing in a few different shades and textures with velvet cushion covers. "I love the Aura Velvet Cushion," Kristy says. "The lime helps to balance out the heavy weight of the velvet fabrication."

3. Velvet Covers

Decorative velvet throws and quilts are one of the easiest ways to update your room. An affordable way to infuse extra Elizabethan decadence into your décor is to personalise each piece by monogramming your initials.

Shop: Kip + Co Cherry Velvet Quilt Cover, $249

4. Velvet Accessories

Capture excess with over-the-top accessories. A velvet valance provides dramatic draping that will help frame your windows and punch a pretty touch of plush. You can also play with artworks or other small items.

5. Velvet Seating

Sit on your throne with a reupholstered velvet arm chair. Flea markets provide a perfect hunting ground where you can find classic originals that can be contemporised with materials found at fabric stores. Think classic with navy, rich or moss green, or go bright with candy-colours including punchy pink or electric yellow.
