Own a non-working fireplace? Get creative and transform your room by making it warm, bright and colourful - learn how!
When you have a fireplace that doesn't serve its initial purpose it can be a bit of a let down. But it might be a blessing in disguise and get your creative juices flowing. There are a number of simple interior decorating ideas that can transform your room and make use of your non-working fireplace.
Functional and arty
A large fireplace can be broken up with simple shelves. Fill the shelves with stacks of books, globes, busts, other ornaments and picture frames. You don't have to cram too much in - negative space can make your shelves look more visually appealing.
If you have some wallpaper pieces left over from a feature wall or a separate project, use it here for something extra special. A wallpapered back for your shelves is sure to add texture and dimension to your project. Alternatively, you could paint the shelves and the surroundings two different colours for a funky pop of colour.
Warmth and light
If you still want your fireplace to be a source of warmth and light, there are a number of options you could try. Buy a collection of candles in all shapes and sizes and arrange them in your fireplace. Pick out a few different sized candlesticks to play with levels. If you have little ones or are concerned about leaving the flames unattended, try out some battery-operated, fireless candles. Depending on the brand and quality, they can look pretty realistic.
Another option is to drape fairy lights around the fireplace, or find a large glass holder and fill it up with them. An orb lantern is another simple way to instantly transform your fireplace.
Fresh and colourful
You could use this opportunity to add much-needed colour and brightness to an area. Flowers and plants will instantly freshen up the space. Putting vibrant fuchsia gerberas in a vase here will also fill your room with a lovely fragrance. A leafy green plant instantly adds life and can lift a dark fireplace to a focal point of your room.
