How to Choose your Bed Linen

Spring is in the air! As you spruce up your home for summer it pays to give your bedding an update. Senior Bed Linen Buyer at Adairs, Alana Spence shares some top tips for choosing the right bed linen for you!

Invest in good quality bed linen
Investing in good quality bed linen is essential - we spend almost a third of our lives in bed! It’s a good idea to stick with reputable brands offering quality product as some cheaper brands use inexpensive, low grade cotton and even create inferior thread counts by twisting multiple yarns together.

It’s not just about the thread count
A high thread count does not always equal a better sheet, so it’s best to go on how the sheets feel. Thread count refers to how many threads are woven per 10cm2 of the fabric and this together with a good quality yarn and the type of weave will determine how the fabric feels.

If you like a crisp, smooth feel go for a percale weave. Percale is a durable weave that should feel smooth and cool to touch. Commonly used in hotels, this fabric will continue to soften through washing and use and is usually wrinkle resistant due to the tight weave. You’ll find percale weaves in thread counts of 225 up to 500.

If you like a silky, luxurious feel then go for a sateen weave. This weave has multiple horizontal threads over and one under, placing most of the threads on the surface of the sheet creating a silky soft finish with a beautiful lustre. Sateen is woven with fine cotton and is delicate so must be cared for as such to ensure the bed linen’s longevity. Sateen weaves are generally used in 300 thread counts and up – mostly popular in 1,000 thread count.

Experiment with textures and new fibres
There are now many advances in fibre technology, which means our choices in sheeting fibres go beyond just cotton. Fibres such as Modal® and Tencel® (made from wood pulp) are becoming increasingly popular due to their silk like texture and thermal regulating properties. Pure Linen is also beautiful to sleep under. It has a relaxed, understated look, is light and cool in the summer months and easy to throw on the bed with absolutely no ironing required.

Embrace colour!
This season is all about colour and bold patterns. If you’re looking to just brighten up your existing white or plain quilt cover, throw on a few bright cushions.
